Newcastle United continue on a relentless run of form.

Despite so many injury worries, a crisis that deepened with Nick Pope going off injured, Newcastle beat Manchester United at St James’ Park on Saturday night.

Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game as Eddie Howe’s side recorded back-to-back wins over the Manchester giants, who were lucky some wasteful finishing in the first-half kept them in the game.

It was another big goal for Gordon, who is seemingly growing into things on a game-by-game basis. After a difficult first few months at the club following a £40m move from Everton last January, the 22-year-old is now up to six Premier League goals for the season. Throw in his three assists too and it’s clear Newcastle have a fearsome attacker on their hands.

Indeed, he also got special praise from pundit Jamie Carragher.

Anthony Gordon: Jamie Carragher’s big praise for Newcastle star

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) during the game on Saturday night, Carragher wrote: “Anthony Gordon has been one of the best players in the PL this season.

“Carry on like this & he’s going the Euros!”

Anthony Gordon: How did Newcastle star play vs Man United?

It wasn’t just his goal to get excited about.

According to WhoScored data, Gordon had two shots on target (ranking first in Howe’s team), played two key passes (fourth) and contributed two tackles.

An all-round presence, it would be fantastic to see him rewarded by England for his hard work. On a night when Three Lions regular Marcus Rashford failed to produce anything of note, Gareth Southgate must surely be taking Gordon’s rapid-fire improvement into account.

Until then, however, England’s loss is very much Newcastle’s game.

A return to his former home in Goodison Park is up next. The story surely writes itself…
