After VAR had initially overturned an penalty call, Trippier stepped up smash home from the edge of the area.

It took a nick off Emi Buendia, but it was a fantastic hit nonetheless.

Sadly, Trippier went off injured shortly after half-time, and the club have now confirmed he has broken a bone in his foot.

Carragher and Richards praise Trippier on Sky Sports

Ahead of yesterday’s game, Trippier was the focus on Sky Sports. Carragher and Richards both sang his praises live on air.

Carragher said: “It’s one of those players you think, Newcastle have done well to get him there, really, more than some of the other players in the squad. He has had a huge impact.

“Just his general play, having Kieran Trippier there with the clubs he’s played for, La Liga winner. It just gives everybody a lift and gives everyone that feeling of we’ve got a top player here.”

Richards added: “I’m so happy for him because he was at Manchester City and obviously I was in front of him and Pablo Zabaleta was in front of him. He’s gone the long way round, went to Burnley, went to Spurs, goes to Atletico, wins the league, scores in a World Cup. His career’s been outstanding.”

Him breaking a bone in his foot are very concerning. At this stage, we don’t know how long he will be out. But the likes of Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo must now step up in his absence.

The thought of Trippier being out for an extended period is certainly deeply uncomfortable.
