Jamie Carragher addresses claims that one PL team are like Newcastle under Mike Ashley

Jamie Carragher has noticed that people are comparing Everton’s current situation to that of Mike Ashley-era Newcastle United and he’s not having it.

Everton are in a huge mess right now, which will probably come as a huge source of mirth for many a Newcastle fan given the strange rivalry that exists in pockets of both fandoms online.

However, it wasn’t all that long ago that Newcastle were suffering a similar fate. Seemingly broke and unable to sign players of any real quality, and those who did come good were sold off for profit. All this coming after a Billionaire saviour arrived with promises of greatness.

Should Newcastle fans be more sympathetic towards Everton?

Everton have also just had a potential takeover fall through, something Newcastle fans have experienced on multiple occasions. So there should be some sympathy towards the blue side of Liverpool from our fans, but I doubt there’ll be much of it.

Writing for The Telegraph, however, Jamie Carragher doesn’t believe the two situations are all that comparable.

Carragher wrote: “I have read some comparisons between [Farhad] Moshiri’s Everton and Mike Ashley’s era at Newcastle United – two huge clubs desperate for someone competent to take control. To me, there is a massive difference. Everton got the billionaire owner they believed would take them to the next level. Unlike at Newcastle during their lowest periods, Moshiri cannot be accused of lacking ambition. He spent a fortune. What has been missing is the expertise to use those resources properly.”

People questioned if the PIF were ‘fit and proper’ owners

To give Carragher his due here he’s absolutely spot on. Moshiri never gave up on Everton, he just spent too much money which landed them in a heap of trouble. Mike Ashley threw in the towel at the first sign of things going wrong and the club never truly recovered after that.

I’m not saying that I’d rather have had Moshiri than Ashley as if the PIF had taken over from a Moshiri mess we’d be years away from where we are now as there’d be so much to correct financially.

The Premier League and the media make all this noise about the fit and proper owner’s test, especially when the PIF were trying to buy Newcastle, but clearly none of it seems to cover whether someone can actually run a football club properly. All it cares about is whether they have the money to back up their claims and that leads to owners like Ashley and Moshiri, clueless chancers who do more harm than good.
