James Milner has revealed that the angriest he has ever felt in his footballing career came while he was playing for Newcastle United.
The former Newcastle man is very well respected in the world of football and has had very few controversies during his time in the game.
Milner was on The High Performance Podcast where he revealed that his transfer saga with Aston Villa sparked the angriest moment in his career.
Milner was furious with lack of playing time at Newcastle
Milner has always been a reliable, level-headed player whose experience in the Premier League and high work rate has helped him to become one of the most useful utility players for several clubs.
But even the best of us can lose our temper when pushed to a point, and that’s exactly what happened with the three-time Premier League champion when he was at Newcastle, still only at the beginning of his footballing career.
Milner had been sent out on loan to Villa in the 2005-06 season and upon his return was about to join them permanently, but the deal fell through.
Newcastle had claimed that they never wanted to do the deal anyway and that he was a highly valued member of the squad, but when he was then not picked to play or even make the bench, the England international lost his cool.
Almost two decades later and Milner is now sharing how the whole transfer debacle with Newcastle and Villa led to the angriest moment in his career.
On the podcast, Milner said: “I was at Newcastle and they accepted a bid for me to go to Aston Villa on deadline day after I’d be on loan there. I went down to Villa, offer had been accepted and then Martin O’Neil had said the plug’s been pulled on it.
“I started laughing thinking he was joking, he said no they’ve changed their minds. So I went back up to Newcastle, they’d changed their mind and one of their deals hadn’t gone through.
“The manager [Glenn Roeder] told me ‘I never wanted you to go’, so my head’s all over the place, but I’m ready to go let’s get on with it.
“That Saturday come I wasn’t in the squad, not even on the bench. So, I went in there and said a few choice words and I think that’s the angriest I’ve ever been.
“I went into the player’s lounge and my now wife’s dad was sat there and he said he’d never seen me like that, he didn’t know what to say. That was the only time where I’d got that angry and probably wasn’t that calculated in what I was saying.”

Milner’s time in the North East wasn’t his ideal
Milner has previously revealed how he was brought to tears over a lack of playing time whilst at Newcastle, so it is obviously something that affected his whole time on Tyneside.
From the outside looking in you perhaps wouldn’t have expected something like this to be going on behind the scenes, but it was Milner’s professionalism that kept him from causing a controversy.
Now that we have all of this information on the experienced midfielder, it makes you wonder what kind of stories that go on in football that fans will never hear about.
