Newcastle United picked up another point in the Premier League on Friday.

The Magpies couldn’t record their first win, but held Leeds United to a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park.

Steve Bruce’s side fell behind when Raphinha’s cross went all the way in past Karl Darlow, who was in for his first appearance of the season after struggling with Covid-19.

Star man Allan Saint-Maximin got Newcastle back on level terms though with a fantastic goal just before half-time.

The Frenchman shimmied past a couple of players before squeezing his shot into the far corner.

Newcastle didn’t have too many efforts in the second-half, but they were at least a bit more assured at the back.

One man who put in a decent display against the Whites was Jamaal Lascelles.

He didn’t play in the opening game against West Ham United, and came in for criticism for giving away a late penalty against Southampton.

But here he was much improved.

According to The Other 14, Lascelles made nine blocks and clearances in the game.

That was bettered by only Kurt Zouma (13) of the non-Big Six clubs.

And according to Sofascore, he also won 3/5 duels.

Newcastle need their captain to lead

Newcastle need their captain to be leading by example.

He and the other defenders have just not been good enough so far this season.

But his display against Leeds was much better from the 27-year-old.

He needs to kick on from that outing now and try and keep things tight at the back for Newcastle.

That goal difference column could well end up being crucial come the end of the season.
