Jamaal Lascelles made his first Premier League start for Newcastle United in 19 months in the 2-0 win over Burnley yesterday.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles is well aware that his game time will be limited but is more than happy to stick around at Newcastle and lead the team from pitch-side, but is always ready to step in when needed.

Lascelles has been called upon in the last two games and has done exceptionally well in both games.

Eddie Howe made wholesale changes against Man City

When asked after the win at Burnley what it says about the strength of the squad that Eddie Howe is able to make so many changes and the side still get the job done, Lascelles heaped all the praise on the manager.

Lascelles told NUFC TV that it’s all down to the £60,000-a-week man, saying: “I just think it’s huge credit to the manager really and the staff, because as you saw the other day, eleven [sic] changes against [Manchester] City, some players that haven’t played, even myself who’s not played in a while, Dummy [Paul Dummett] stepping in and beating Man City and again tonight, players stepping in and doing more.

“So I think we’ve got a great squad but it comes from hard work on the training ground and buying into the manager’s philosophy and the culture at the club.“

Newcastle fans are now seeing the quality in the squad

It’s at the point now where there’s very little meltdown online when the teamsheet is announced and it doesn’t resemble something that most fans would class as the strongest XI. Howe made 10 changes against Manchester City and still managed to dump the European Champions out of the Carabao Cup.

Eddie Howe has managed to get every single player drilled in exactly how he wants the side to play, every player seemingly knows their role and because of that, when a substitute is brought on, or a ‘reserve’ player is used in the starting line-up, everything still works.

This is what’s going to take Newcastle to the next level and prove that last season’s success was absolutely no fluke.
