Jamaal Lascelles says it would be a ‘dream come true‘ to lift a trophy as Newcastle United captain.

The Magpies have been trophy shy for more than half a century. They won the Fairs Cup in 1969, and you have to go back to 1955 for our last major domestic honour.

We came close a few times in the 90s, but chasing silverware quickly became a thing of the past under Mike Ashley.

The Magpies stopped prioritising the cups, often crashing out of the FA Cup and League Cup at an early stage.

In his defence, they did win two trophies under Ashley – two Championship crowns following relegation…

Newcastle takeover could lead to trophies for Jamaal Lascelles

“That would be amazing,” Lascelles told the Chronicle when asked about possibly lifting silverware.

“It’s what every sportsman wants and they want to play for something.

“They want to say they have won silverware. For me to be the one to lift it – that’s a dream come true, and it would be for everybody in Newcastle.

“Now the takeover has happened there is no better time to start the journey of success.”

The takeover has brought fresh hope back to St James’ Park. Fans can dream again, no longer held back by the shackles of the Sports Direct supremo.

While the first priority will be Premier League survival, attentions will eventually turn to trophies.

The new owners have huge ambitions for Newcastle United. They want to take them to the top of the game.

However, to become Premier League champions will take a ridiculous amount of money. The gap between the bottom and the top is seismic.

But a cup run certainly isn’t outside the realms of possibility in the next few years. Even in the new year we could have a proper go at the FA Cup.

Bob Moncur was the last man to lift a major trophy for Newcastle in 1969. Jamaal Lascelles dreams of being the next, but will he get that chance?
