It's very concerning what has happened to Matty Bondswell

Matty Bondswell joined Shrewsbury Town on loan from Newcastle United in January (NUFC.co.uk). However, about two months later, he has been called back to the under-23s by the club (NUFC.co.uk).

The full-back joined the Magpies in March last year. He’s been part of their under-23s side and even played for the senior team in a friendly against Doncaster Rovers last summer.

Newcastle got Bondswell from RB Leipzig, which meant there was some excitement around him. However, at Shrewsbury, he didn’t register a single appearance. The closest he got was being an unused sub on multiple occasions.

Bondswell still has time to put things right and get his Newcastle career on track

It is definitely a concern that Bondswell wasn’t able to get any minutes for Shrewsbury. Considering the fact he was in RB Leipzig’s youth system indicates he should have some potential.

Having said that, there’s no need to write him off. He’s still only 19-years-old, which means he has plenty of time to salvage his career.

Perhaps Bondswell will spend another campaign with the under-23s before getting another loan move. It was likely he maybe wasn’t quite ready to make the step up.

However, this type of situation is nothing new. A number of Toon loanees have struggled to get minutes before on loan. None of them were able to amount to much for the club.

But Bondswell could well be one to break this stigma. Investment from the new owners will hopefully go into the youth system as well as new signings. So, he could be a player that could reap the benefits of improvements of the current youth set-up.

This season three loanees have performed well out on loan so far. Elliot Anderson, Matty Longstaff and Joe White have caught the eye in League Two. Hopefully, it’s the start of some new and improved Newcastle youngsters.
