Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has spoken on the impact Eddie Howe has had at the club. It’s safe to say the skipper’s comments were completely positive.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 28-year-old gave the Magpies boss a rave review.

“No one can say a bad word about him,” Lascelles stated.

“What he’s done is phenomenal. From the position he picked us up at to where we finished off and the transition of the style of play, the philosophy, the feeling around the place, improved individuals.

“It’s just crazy to actually think about what he’s actually achieved. It’s unheard of really.

“We all owe it to him, ultimately, basically turned our lives upside down.”

Howe decided to remain with the Englishman as captain of the club. It was a decision some Toon fans wouldn’t have been happy with, but we believe it was the right call.

Lascelles could well be Newcastle’s fourth-choice centre-back, but his comments show he’s a real team player

Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest takes place this Saturday. Furthermore, it’s unlikely that Lascelles will be in the starting XI for the opening fixture.

But the skipper’s comments on Howe show he’s captain material. He’s likely aware of the situation but he’s willing to put his own potential personal issues aside. He understands the bigger picture and wants success for the club.

Lascelles’ role at Newcastle could be very different this season. He may not feature on the pitch as much this season, but he can still have an impact.

The captain has always spoken well in previous interviews. An example of this was when he spoke on the issue of some fans questioning his captaincy.

The fact Howe has decided to stick with him shows he has a positive impact in that role. So for the coming season, the 28-year-old will likely be doing his duties as captain behind the scenes.

There seems to be harmony amongst the Toon players, so why change it?

Should the Magpies have injury woes or rotate for cup competitions the skipper can prove himself. With a few strong performances when given the chance, Lascelles’ role at Newcastle could be back on the pitch.

Howe’s side has put a lot of work into pre-season. Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest could see him make some surprise calls based on pre-season. After all, he sees the players on a consistent basis and will know them better than you or I.
