In true Magpies fashion it’s been dragged out, but Joelinton is finally a Newcastle United player.

The club confirmed the six-year deal on Tuesday evening, after images throughout the day emerged on social media of the player, Steve Bruce and Lee Charnley all at St James’ Park.

He will wear the famous number nine shirt, the club have announced.

This is a transfer that has been on the cards for a while now. The Brazilian was first linked months ago when Rafa Benitez was in charge, and the club have pressed on with a deal in the Spaniard’s absence.

There were reports last week that a deal was on the brink of being completed, and some fans were understandably concerned by the delay. But now it’s official. Joelinton is a Magpie.

The 22-year-old is the first signing of the Steve Bruce era, and becomes the club’s most expensive signing ever. After Michael Owen held the record for 13-and-a-half years, Miguel Almiron has only been Newcastle’s record signing for a matter of months.

This is a step in the right direction for Newcastle. However, a lot of fans will just see it as simply papering over the cracks.

Either way, his arrival is essential. With Salomon Rondon not returning and Ayoze Perez heading to Leicester, the pressure is on Joelinton to score the goals. We still need more attacking reinforcements, but at least it’s a start.

Welcome to the Toon, Joelinton. Sorry it’s such a mess right now…
