Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have both been crippled with injuries as of late.
The Magpies could field a full starting XI of players who are out of action due to injury, while there has also been the added issue of Sandro Tonali’s suspension.
Newcastle have simply had to deal with it, with the same 10 outfield players starting the previous four games. The only change against Everton was in goal, with Martin Dubravka replacing Nick Pope following his shoulder injury.
Next up for Eddie Howe’s side is a trip to the capital, with Newcastle taking on a Tottenham team that will also be without some key players.
The biggest absentee will be James Maddison, who has been outstanding since missing out on a move to Newcastle and joining Spurs instead. Elsewhere, the likes of Mickey van de Ven and Rodrigo Bentancur are also injured.
The walking wounded are set to meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, and now Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has commented on the injuries that both clubs have suffered.
Ange Postecoglou compares Newcastle’s injury crisis to Tottenham’s
Ahead of Sunday’s game against Newcastle, Postecoglou commented on the Toon injury crisis and compared it to the situation at Spurs.
“I think it’s fair to say Newcastle are probably the only other club who have gone through anything like we have from an injury perspective,” he told Football London.
“That’s going to affect every club. I think they’ve battled through it reasonably well, very well in fact considering the number of disruptions they’ve had to their first team squad and the challenges they’ve had.
“I think that any club in the Premier League that has gone through that kind of period will find it hard to get a consistency in results. It will be a tough game on Sunday for us because again they’ve got a team that has goal threats and they work hard as a unit and we’ve got to match that.”
Newcastle have suffered more than Spurs
Postecoglou is right. Newcastle are the only club with as bad injury luck as Tottenham. In fact, the Magpies are even worse off!
We have got issues all over the pitch, with the same group of players having to play every game at the moment. That is incredibly tough, with Newcastle playing twice a week due to their European and domestic cup exploits.
The hard work does not stop for Newcastle, who will hope for a better performance away from home when they face Tottenham this weekend.
But their injuries woes will not relent, and neither will Tottenham’s. Regardless, it should be a great game of football, and one that Howe will be desperate to win ahead of the midweek Champions League clash with AC Milan.
