‘It wasn’t to be’: Howe says ‘incredible’ Newcastle star is unlucky to miss out on the World Cup

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has said Magpies midfielder Joelinton was unlucky to miss out on Brazil’s World Cup squad.

As shared by NUFC TV on YouTube, taking to his pre-match press conference ahead of the Toon’s Carabao Cup clash against Crystal Palace, Howe spoke of his disappointment for the 26-year-old.

“There’s always an element of disappointment for anyone that misses out,” Howe said.

“I think Joe has been incredible for me since I joined the football club.

“Every single day he’s very consistent in his work and has produced some brilliant performances.

“It wasn’t to be for him.”

Howe says he’s disappointed for Joelinton

Looking at Joelinton’s form this season, he was more than deserving of a place in Brazil’s squad.

The midfielder has started 11 matches this term in which he has controlled the middle of the park, ultimately helping push the Magpies up into third place in the Premier League table.

According to average match statistics, the Brazilian has been Newcastle’s third-best player this season – only behind Toon superstars Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.

These figures also illustrate the 26-year-old’s strengths when it comes to attacking set-pieces and creating chances through individual bouts of skill.

Constantly covering the field in pursuit of the ball, Joelinton’s fantastic work-ethic has been clear to see at St James’ Park this season.

Whether he wasn’t included due to a former stereotype, for which he struggled to score as the Magpies’ out-and-out striker, remains unclear.

However, from what he has demonstrated on Tyneside this season, Joelinton fully deserved a spot on the plane to Qatar this winter.
