Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden has sent a message on social media following yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Watford.

The Magpies missed a golden opportunity to claim their first victory of the season.

Steve Bruce’s side were wasteful in front of goal, failing to capitalise on a 1-0 lead given to them by Sean Longstaff.

Ben Foster made a number of saves in the second-half to keep the Hornets in it.

And on 72 minutes, in-form winger Ismaila Sarr headed in at the back post.

Watford then had the ball in the back of the net on 87 minutes, but VAR ruled Josh King offside.

That would have been a major blow for the visitors.

There were definitely positives to take from the performance, but not getting three points was hugely frustrating.

Following the game, Hayden summed it up well with his message on social media.

He said: “Tough to put into words the feelings after that game. Should have been our first 3 points of the season no doubt. Have to stick with it and be more ruthless in both boxes.

“Happy to see @seanlongstaff97 score today, performances have deserved it. Thank you for your support.”

Newcastle need to discover cutting edge quickly

It’s all well and good trying to find small positives from draws and defeats.

But Newcastle need to record that first win and quickly, before things turn really bad.

Yesterday undoubtedly should have been the first victory.

The wastefulness in the absence of Callum Wilson is a big concern, and the players simply have to get more ruthless going forwards, as Hayden says.
