2019 has been pretty incredible for Sean Longstaff.
He started the year by breaking into the Newcastle United team, nailing down a place in Rafa Benitez’s starting XI due to various injuries.
The midfielder took his chance, showing he has the talent to be a top class Premier League midfielder. Longstaff played against some of the best the Premier League has to offer, and didn’t look out of place.
After nine games, his season was over. The 21-year-old picked up an injury away to West Ham, ending his breakout season.
And now he’s linked with a £50 million move to Manchester United. The Red Devils are looking at young British players, so it’s no surprise they want Longstaff.
The fans obviously want him to stay, but could this be the ideal time for him to leave Newcastle?
Longstaff might not get this chance again
Benitez clearly trusted Longstaff. Even when key players returned from injury, the Spaniard stuck by the academy product.
But now Benitez has gone. Another manager could come in who doesn’t see Longstaff as a starter. He could be back playing youth football, sliding down the pecking order in the process.
And it’s not as if Newcastle are a stable club right now. It’s an absolute shambles. Could you blame him if he took the chance to get out of here?
Manchester United clearly want him. If he moves to Old Trafford, he’ll get a chance to succeed.
But if he stays at Newcastle and either doesn’t play or struggles to replicate his form, the likes of Manchester United might not come back.
Sadly, this could be the perfect time for Longstaff to leave Newcastle.
