International manager says 24-year-old Newcastle man’s rehab is ‘going well’

Newcastle United are struggling with an injury crisis at the moment but will be delighted to see the return of one of their star players.

It feels like there is a new injury to discuss every game, with Callum Wilson being the latest addition to the list after being substituted at half-time against Borussia Dortmund.

But there is some good news and that comes from Sweden manager Janne Andersson who has claimed that Alexander Isak’s rehab is going well and that his return is hopefully right around the corner.

Isak had started the home tie against Dortmund before being forced off 10 minutes into the match after aggravating a groin issue he had picked up on international duty.

Isak’s return from injury will give huge confidence boost to Newcastle

Newcastle head into their Premier League fixture against Bournemouth this weekend without a recognised striker – assuming Wilson is not deemed fit enough.

The £63m star’s goals have been sorely missed, even despite some key victories against Manchester United and Arsenal.

Janne Andersson spoke to Fotbollskanalen on how Isak is recovering: “The rehab goes well, he says, so it’s fun and hopefully it will not take so long. But he was not available to be here.”

Swedish star give’s Newcastle something different

Callum Wilson has certainly done a good job leading the line for Eddie Howe, but it’s difficult to come up with a plan B with just one forward available.

Anthony Gordon has at times been moved into the centre, like against Arsenal, but this just isn’t where the 22-year-old wants to be playing consistently.

Having Isak fit to start or come on for Wilson has been absolutely huge for Newcastle in the past and will open up so many more doors to Howe in the coming months.

While Wilson is more of your typical poacher, Isak can be utilised in the bigger games when you need someone to get hold of the ball and drive you up the pitch. His ability on the ball is nothing short of astound and hopefully we see more of that soon as he returns to the team.
