Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after Jamaal Lascelles shared some pretty defeatist comments with NUFC TV.
The Magpies captain – who Spotrac say earns £40,000-a-week – said: ‘We maybe should have realised we’re playing against Manchester United and kind of just shut up shop a little bit more and gone for the draw and looked to counter attack them a bit.’
Naturally, for a club of Newcastle’s stature, comments such as these from the captain of all people haven’t gone down too well amongst the supporters.
Regardless of the opposition, no player should ever really be appearing in front of the media and saying that their team should’ve ‘gone for the draw’ like Lascelles did.
What makes his comments even more triggering among the St James’ Park faithful is the fact that Manchester United had just conceded six goals to Tottenham the week before their 4-1 win over us.
If seeing them receive such a hammering didn’t inspire the Magpies to attack the Red Devils, then what will?
In isolation, these comments might not have sparked such an angry response if Newcastle were doing well.
However, we have the fourth-lowest possession stats in the Premier League this term with an average of 43.8% per game, while we also only average 8.8 shots per game according to WhoScored – the fifth-fewest in the division.
Let’s see how the Newcastle fans on Twitter reacted to these worrying comments from the club captain…
Newcastle fans left fuming after Jamaal Lascelles’ defeatist comments
sorry like but this negative attitude is embarrassing

So the answer to that game is to sit back even more? He actually sounds like Bruce which is frightening.
Jesus Christ man, there’s so much wrong with the mentality and the tactical set up with this team is terrifying.

The mentality of our club really is pathetic. I expect a comment like that from Bruce but not our Captain🤦♂️.

And there is the ‘front-foot’ attitude from our captain showing where leadership mentality level is. That was a Man Utd team on a mental tightrope and instead of pushing them off Bruce chose to hold their hand. Club mentality is rotten #nufc

Jesus Christ, you can tell he’s had Steve in his ear. Such a defeatist attitude throughout the club man #nufc

That coming from a captain, a very average player these days and another insult to our intelligence. We need a captain who fights from the front, end of.
