Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says he couldn’t be happier with Dan Burn and his contributions to the club.
During his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Southampton, the Magpies boss showered praise on the 30-year-old defender, who is currently in contention to go to the World Cup with England later on this month.
As per Newcastle’s official YouTube channel, the Toon manager claimed: “Gareth knows Dan’s capabilities.
“He can play various positions, incredible person – great leadership skills.
“Couldn’t place a higher value on him and I do think he can do that on the international stage, but that’s Gareth’s call.”
Eddie Howe showers praise on Dan Burn
Arriving at St James’ Park in January to help strengthen the Toon’s defence, Burn has been a revelation at Newcastle.
Upon the arrival of £35m-rated Sven Botman, many thought the Englishman would spend the season on the sidelines.
However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
The former Brighton man has played every Premier League game thus far this season. Moving to left-back to accommodate the Dutch arrival, the 30-year-old has played a crucial role in Howe’s starting XI.
On occasions, he has filled in at centre-back, but his exemplary performances on the left-hand side of the defence illustrate his versatile skillset and fantastic willingness to fulfil the team’s needs.
Although the Magpies confirmed the £15m signing of Matt Targett to come in at left-back, Burn has really made the position his own this season.
With such presence in the side’s back-line, it is no wonder the defender is in contention to feature for England at the World Cup this winter.
However, with Southgate at the helm, who knows whether Burn will go or not.
