Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has now confirmed that he will be unavailable for tonight’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

It is set to be a huge occasion, as Champions League football returns to St James’ Park for the first time in over 20 years, but one of Eddie Howe’s key players will now not feature.

Wilson, who joined the club for £20m from Bournemouth in 2020, has never played a home game in the competition, and he will now have to wait for his opportunity to play in front of the Newcastle faithful against Europe’s elite sides.

Wilson confirms he will miss PSG tie

PSG travel to Newcastle tonight in a highly-anticipated game in what has been dubbed the ‘group of death,’ with the French Champions beating Borussia Dortmund in the opening game, whilst Howe’s side snatched a draw at AC Milan.

Newcastle are facing a number of issues as it appears that Sven Botman and Harvey Barnes will miss the tie, and Wilson being out is a further blow to their chances of success.

Speaking on the Footballers’ Football Podcast, Wilson shared his disappointment that he will not play a part in the match.

“Me personally, I’m not going to make the game, unfortunately, but it is what it is. There will be many more,” Wilson stated.

Wilson has missed the last two games since coming off in the 8-0 victory, and Alexander Isak has led the line in both matches.

Howe has been keen to rotate the pair, and with both in good form, the balance of fixtures appeared to be working.

With Wilson now out, Isak will likely have to play the whole 90 minutes with no reinforcements available.

Barnes and Matt Ritchie are unavailable as wide options, leaving just Miguel Almiron, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy as senior options, and there is no other senior number nine who could help support Isak tonight.

Wilson will be frustrated to miss the huge occasion tonight, but as he says, there will be plenty more opportunity in the upcoming Champions League games as Newcastle aim to qualify from the group.
