If Allan Saint-Maximin joins Newcastle, we must be patient with him

With Joelinton through the door, it looks like Allan Saint-Maximin could be the next new arrival at Newcastle United.

According to the Shields Gazette, the Magpies are looking to announce another signing within the next 48 hours, and the French winger is the number one target.

Saint-Maximin has hinted at a deal by liking a few Newcastle-based Instagram pictures, and some have pointed out that he shares an agent with Joelinton.

The winger looks like an exciting player, and would certainly get fans on the edge of their seat. But a closer look at his highlight reel shows that he could be a very frustrating player.

A sensational dribbler, Saint-Maximin doesn’t seem to have a consistent final ball. He can run past every player on the pitch, but his end product still needs a lot of work.

Now who does this remind you of? Remember Hatem Ben Arfa? The mercurial talent was adored at St James’ Park, but often would get into deadly positions before failing to pick the right pass or find the net.

At 22, Saint-Maximin is still very young. He’s far from perfect. If he was the complete player, he’d cost more than the reported £20 million and he probably wouldn’t be heading to Newcastle.

Patience is required. He will no doubt dazzle us with his flicks and tricks, but he will likely frustrate too when it doesn’t result in a goal. That final ball will come in time, and we must give him just that.
