Any Newcastle United fans watching the Champions League last night might have felt a sense of envy.
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain played out the second leg of their quarter-final clash, with the Germans winning 1-0 on the night.
But it was PSG who reached the last four on away goals, with revenge sweet for them after losing last season’s final.
Despite the defeat on the night, the French champions played well and were unlucky to lose.
One man who played fantastically well was Idrissa Gueye.
The dynamo was outstanding in the engine room, winning eight out of 10 duels according to Sofascore.
He also made six successful tackles – which was the most of anyone from either side.
Foot Mercato saw him as the man of the match, with the French outlet giving him an 8.5 rating and branding him ‘unbelievable’.
What might have been for Newcastle
Back in January, it was claimed by L’Equipe that Newcastle were looking to bring Gueye back to the Premier League on a loan basis.
Despite his advancing years, it seems the Senegal international – who cost PSG £30 million in 2019 (BBC Sport) – is still a quality player.
Who knows how close Newcastle actually got to bringing him to St. James’ Park a few months back, but performances like the one against Bayern are definintely uncomfortable viewing.
