Ian Wright felt Karl Darlow could have done better for Wolves goals

Karl Darlow’s role in Newcastle United’s defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers has been brought into question by BBC pundit Ian Wright.

Darlow had been rock solid since coming back into the side and replacing Freddie Woodman.

But in the 2-1 loss at Molineux, Darlow had an off day which came back to bite Steve Bruce’s side.

Going into gameweek seven in the Premier League season, Darlow sat in the top four goalkeepers in the league for save percentages.

But the 30-year-old has now dropped down to ninth in the save percentage category (SofaScore) following his performance against Bruno Lage’s side.

Darlow made just one save against Wolves, but it was the easy manner in which Hee-Chan Hwang scored past Newcastle’s number 26 which has been disputed.

Calls for Dubravka will intensify

Gary Lineker questioned whether Darlow was culpable for Hee-Chan Hwang’s opener.

Speaking on last night’s Match of the Day, Ian Wright said: “I think the keeper has got his angles all wrong and he looks very small.”

The former Arsenal striker wasn’t particularly enamoured with Darlow’s attempts to save Hwang’s second strike.

Wright added: “I’m not sure about the goalkeeper there.”

With Martin Dubravka recently returning to training and stepping up his recovery, Darlow’s stranglehold on the number one spot may have significantly loosened.

The Slovakian stopper has two weeks until the club’s next clash against Tottenham following the international break and he might not be too far away from full fitness ahead of the game at St. James’ Park.

Just like when Woodman’s mistake against Manchester United was scrutinised, Darlow’s performance at Wolves could force Bruce into a rethink.

Darlow was easily beaten by Hwang and it was a surprise to see him beaten twice by a similar strike, he almost seemed unaware where his goal was.

Hopefully this is just a blip and Darlow can get back to his best quickly, but with Dubravka knocking on the door, he can ill-afford anymore bad days at the office.
