Ian Wright has now decided whether he would take Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon or Chelsea’s Cole Palmer to the Euros with England this summer.
With a number of senior figures out of form this season there’s a space up for grabs in the England team and both Gordon and Palmer has had impressive campaigns for their respective clubs.
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the game against Chelsea, Wright claimed that Gordon’s pace just edges him ahead of Palmer in the race for England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Wright thinks Gordon should be selected by England
Gordon is yet to receive a call-up to the England first team from Gareth Southgate while Palmer was included in the last squad due to injuries with the Chelsea star making his debut in November against Malta.
After struggling in his first six months, Gordon has enjoyed a breakthrough season in a black and white shirt this season having netted nine Premier League goals and assisting a further five.
The 23-year-old also enjoyed a very successful summer for England’s Under-21 team having won player of the tournament as the they lifted the trophy, so he’s already got a great record in international football.
Wright is clearly a big fan of the winger and thinks that he may just have something different in his game to Palmer that England could use in the upcoming summer tournament.
On Gordon, Wright said: “The difference for me is the pace aspect, you can’t underestimate the quality of Cole Palmer, but Gordon’s having the kind of season where in a tournament you can get that pace off the bench.
“At the moment he seems to have found the confidence, he feels like he’s ready to go. I think that would be a really good way to end the season for him by going to the Euros.
“He’s been unbelievable for Newcastle.”

Gordon suffers worrying injury vs Chelsea
Gordon will still be hoping he’s got a seat on that plane in a few months time, but for the first time this season he will now have to recover from a knee injury which he picked up against Chelsea.
The attacker looked out of sorts from mid way in the first half and then looked to aggravate it minutes later before being replaced by Jacob Murphy after 35 minutes.
One of Gordon’s best qualities this season has been the fact that he’s managed to stay injury free for most of the campaign has allowed him to get into a really good rhythm.
Now, the young attacker will wait to see the extent of the damage to his knee and hope that this doesn’t keep him out for very long, especially with Southgate announcing his final squad before the tournament on Thursday.
