Elliot Anderson is staring down the barrel of his biggest season to date as a young Newcastle United player but there’s still another question that lingers around the Whitley Bay native.
Academy graduate Elliot Anderson got his pre-season off to a great start with a goal and an assist against Gateshead on Saturday and now he’s looking forward to a trip north of the border to help Newcastle take on Rangers.
Playing in Scotland won’t be alien to Anderson with the youngster having represented the Scots at international level for the Under 16s, 17s, 18s and Under 21s. Despite that, he is still eligible to become an England international.
Anderson represented Scotland due to the grandparent rule
Playing for Scotland via the grandparent rule, the fact that he’s not been capped at senior level means he could still turn out for England, the country of his birth.
Speaking to The Chronicle about tonight’s fixture at Ibrox, Anderson said: “I am buzzing about it because I have heard it is a great place to play. I think it will be amazing, and I can put one past them.”
Talk then progressed to his international future with Anderson being very diplomatic in his answer saying: “I am just concentrating on Newcastle at the minute. I will see where that gets me.
“I am unsure at the minute to be honest with you. It is a tough decision in my career because it’s for the rest of your career. As of now, I want to work on being a player at Newcastle.”
Anderson’s performances for Newcastle will likely dictate his international future
Many felt that Anderson was due a senior call-up to the Scotland side with Steve Clarke set to hand the youngster his debut in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, but amid reports that England were starting to knock on the door to get him to defect, Anderson was left out of Clarke’s squad.
It seems that Anderson’s main aim this season is to secure a place in Eddie Howe‘s Newcastle side which is sensible. His performances for his club will probably dictate his international future.
Hopefully Anderson can kick on this season after showing flashes of what he is capable of last year.
