Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is understood to have inspired one of the potential candidates to take over as Sunderland manager.
Sunderland have been without a manager since sacking Michael Beale, and their supporters won’t be too keen on what one of their possible targets has been saying about Howe recently.
In an interview with AS, Reims head coach Will Still was asked which managers have inspired him the most and he names Howe alongside Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti.
Still inspired by Howe’s time at Newcastle
Still has earned the reputation as one of the most exciting young managers in Europe having joined the French team when he was just 30-years-old and helping them to a mid-table finish last season.
Sunderland could yet hire the Belgian-born head coach as their search for a new boss continues, but he certainly won’t have done himself any favours with these comments.
It just goes to show how much of a brilliant job Howe has been doing at Newcastle even despite all of the injuries and obstacles that’s have been in his way, and there’s still plenty to play for this season.
It’s good to see someone from outside of the Premier League really take note on the work he’s been doing lately and help everyone to realise that he is a top manager who’s massively overperformed with what he’s got.
On Howe, Still said: “I was inspired by everyone. There is no coach better than another. I think there are different ideas throughout the world of football that we can learn from. Ancelotti too, who has done absolutely crazy things. But we also have Eddie Howe, in Newcastle, who does things very well. You have to try to capture as much information as possible to be able to apply it and not stick to just one style.”
Newcastle must keep Howe next season
There have been rumours suggesting that Howe needs to be replaced if Newcastle want to ever reach the next level and be one of Europe’s elite sides, but that seems a wild suggestion at the moment.
Howe has given his all to this club in the last two years and has given little reason for supporters to believe he can’t take them forwards in the league and Europe, especially should they bring in more players like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.
Jose Mourinho is one who has been mentioned as a possible replacement, but his record in the last five or so years has been poor by his standards so it makes very little sense to make such an extreme change in the way Newcastle are playing football.
