Eddie Howe has heaped praise on Newcastle star Miguel Almiron, ahead of his side’s pre-season clash at the home of his former club Atlanta United.

Almiron joined Newcastle in 2019 after an incredibly successful spell at Atlanta, but took some time to fully display his talents at St James’ Park, before an explosive run of form last season.

The Paraguay captain has failed to score in his last nine games, having had a run of eight goals in nine games prior to a thigh injury earlier this season, but he has been praised for his professionalism.

Speaking in his press conference, Howe highlighted Almiron’s personality and work ethic, and has encouraged him to build upon his promising campaign.

“I think Miggy is the type of player that leads by example rather than words. It’s just an infectious character. It makes me laugh how infectious he is because he gives everything in every training session,” he stated.

“He’s a very professional guy and along with Kieran is one of the first in after a game the next day. He recovers and looks after his body.

“He deserves all the success he gets because of how he conducts himself professionally. I am delighted he had the season he had last year and now we hope he can push on and do better this year.”

Will Almiron start next season?

Given the way he ended the season, as well as the arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes in the last two windows, Almiron may begin to worry about his starting spot on the right wing.

Howe should stick with Almiron at the start of next season in the hope that he can rediscover his form in front of goal, but with Newcastle competing in the Champions League, there will be no room for passengers if he does not perform, and there are other options within the squad who can replace him if necessary.

Howe’s comments hint at the 29-year-old performing well in training, and it may not take him long to play himself back into form, and whilst he continues to impress off the pitch, it seems that there is confidence in his ability and his character from the Newcastle staff.
