Who put 50 pence in Michael Chopra? The former Newcastle striker has come out of nowhere in the past month or so and basically just slagged off the club at any opportunity.
It all started with the takeover saga. Fans were completely on board with what he had to say, slamming Mike Ashley while also claiming that he’d tried to broker a deal for the Sports Direct man to sell the club.
Now he’s turned his attention to record signing Joelinton, who has received a lot of undeserved criticism after his first two Premier League games.
“Joelinton, for £40m you expect better than what he’s given so far,” Chopra told TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning.
“He doesn’t really look like a player who’s going to score a lot of goals for Newcastle.”
I suppose it takes one to know one, doesn’t it? Michael Chopra’s Newcastle career was pretty atrocious. He came through the club’s academy, making his Magpies debut in 2002.
He managed just 31 appearances, scoring only three times. His only Premier League goal came in a 4-1 win over Sunderland in April 2006.
So who is Chopra to say that Joelinton doesn’t look like he’s going to score a lot of goals? The lad has only played two competitive games and has been unlucky not to open his account.
We can’t just write the Brazilian off because of a poor showing at Norwich. No one played well in black and white. And it’s not like Joelinton got much support from his teammates.
For Chopra to write off the 23-year-old after two games is ridiculous and totally hypocritical when you consider how little he achieved as a Newcastle player.
Joelinton must ignore the doubters, especially those who have failed miserably in his position in the past.
