Reims had reportedly accepted an offer from Newcastle.

But later in the day, news began to filter through that the player had turned down a move to the club.

The player’s agent has since stated that he and his client were not convinced about the short and medium-term plan in place at the club (via Chronicle).

Ekitike decided to remain with Reims, and continue his development with his boyhood club, whom he only broke through properly with this season.

It was always going to be interesting to see how Ekitike would fare in his first game since all the speculation about him.

And it turned out to be an eventful day for the youngster.

Ekitike was on target for Reims. He was adjudged to have had his shirt pulled in the penalty area, resulting in Reims getting a penalty.

Ekitike stepped up and actually saw his effort saved, but he then followed in as the ball fortunately fell straight back to him.

That would be the first of five goals for the home side. The convincing victory has taken them seven points clear of the relegation zone and helped them get back to a goal difference of 0.

With another goal yesterday, Ekitike is now up to 10 for the season, which is a really impressive return given his inexperience.

He got the ball rolling for Reims, who needed a big result and performance to alleviate some of the pressure on them.

It was not the best penalty, but he followed in as all good strikers should.

It was a decent display from Ekitike. He won 5/12 duels and also had a few shots according to Sofascore data. He also made one ‘key’ pass.

Newcastle ought to keep an eyeing on the starlet to see how he gets on in the second half of 2021/22.

Perhaps they’ll feel he could be worth going in again for. Although a number of clubs are reportedly already circling.
