Newcastle United will be aiming to get another important win in the race for a Champions League place this weekend but it won’t be easy against Brighton.

After a rare blip against Aston Villa a fortnight ago that brought their hot streak to an end, Newcastle United bounced straight back with a 3-0 win over Ipswich Town last weekend.

Eddie Howe returned to the dugout after his bout of pneumonia to witness Alexander Isak, Dan Burn and Will Osula get the important goals.

It put Newcastle in a commanding position in the race for Champions League qualification but Manchester City are looming hard over their shoulders.

A victory this weekend will be crucial to maintain their spot in the Premier League table but that will be a challenging task on the south coast.

Brighton remain a dangerous side and Newcastle will have to be at their best to get the win.

Brighton vs Newcastle United team news

There’s bad news for Newcastle as Joelinton looks set to miss the rest of the season.

Howe said ahead of the match: “The likelihood is that it will be difficult [for him to play again this season].

“But with Joe, you never rule him out. He’s so motivated to try and come back.

“He had a bit of discomfort in his knee last week before the game so we sought specialist opinion and the opinion was it was nothing serious but he needed a period of rest so he’s now in Brazil.

“We’ll wait and see if we can get him back before the end of the season but the likelihood is probably not.”

There was some good news on Sven Botman, who finally returned to the field last week, though: “He came through last weekend OK. He trained again this week and looks good so it’s been positive to have him back.”

On Anthony Gordon, the manager also added: “He’s had a full week of training this week. He’s looked better physically.

“The main thing for him is, if he’s 100% fit, to focus on his performance and make sure he is at the levels he has been at for the majority of the season. He’s a massive player for us and we’re going to need him.”

Brighton, meanwhile, are without up to four players with Georginio Rutter, James Milner, Ferdi Kadioglu and Jason Steele out.

But they welcome back Adam Webster, Jan Paul van Hecke and Igor.

Prediction

Brighton picked up a crucial win in dramatic fashion last week with a late comeback to defeat West Ham 3-2.

However, they made a pig’s ear of defeating a fairly poor side and have clearly faded away towards the end of the campaign. Newcastle should have enough to beat them.

Prediction: Brighton 1-3 Newcastle.
