The Premier League’s reputation took a big hit following the recent APT ruling which directly affected Newcastle United.
Any lucrative commercial revenue that was coming Newcastle United’s way after the takeover in October 2021 was stripped away from them after Premier League clubs voted in favour of bringing in the Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules.
The decision felt like an insult to those within the club, particularly former Newcastle owner Amanda Staveley who was outraged after the rules were put in place.
Staveley slammed Premier League clubs for voting in favour of the ruling, claiming that they feared Newcastle would have an ‘unfair advantage’ without them in place.
Following the decision, Newcastle fans called for Richard Masters’ resignation as they deemed his position was ‘untenable’. The Premier League CEO Masters publically expressed his concerns about Newcastle’s takeover in 2021 with control being of the club being a big talking point.
With clubs across the league now digesting the decision, the reaction from those inside the club has now been revealed.

Newcastle bosses react to Premier League APT ruling
The PIF have been hard at work to increase the Magpies’ commercial revenue recently. In Newcastle’s win against Wolves in January, PIF advertisements were spotted at St James’ Park. The move was something that previous owner Mike Ashley was fond of doing but without the revenue stream.
Newcastle will not be receiving a lucrative sum of money from the advertisements – not yet at least.
According to Chris Waugh of the Athletic, Newcastle officials were on a routine video call when the verdict was called. However, the reaction was that they recognised that the change of rules would not have any impact on revenue in the short term.

In the long run, Waugh confirmed that PIF-owned organisations could land more lucrative deals with Newcastle. Financial expert Kieran Maguire confirmed on Saturday that Newcastle can seek compensation from the Premier League if they can prove that they have lost out on more money from any existing deals they have.
Newcastle fans rejoiced when the takeover went through with the prospect that they would be able to spend much more freely in the competitive transfer markets. While it looked to be the case in the first 18 months of the takeover, fans are still waiting for a window when hefty sums of money are spent.
Premier League rules cost Newcastle in the January transfer window
The January transfer window was a dire one for Newcastle – sporting director Paul Mitchell failed to sign any players for the first-team as a result of PSR rules that have severely hampered Newcastle’s transfer business.
Newcastle failed to sign Abdukodir Khusanov after it was revealed that they were leading the race to sign him from Lens. He joined Manchester City and helped Pep Guardiola’s side keep a clean sheet against the Magpies on Saturday.
Eddie Howe has previously expressed an eagerness to add at least one player in each transfer window to avoid a ‘staleness’ in his squad – there is a risk that could now happen after failing to sign in January.
From an outgoing perspective, Howe lost Lloyd Kelly to Juventus and Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United in January which left him severely lacking in squad depth for the remainder of the season.
The Magpies have not got three months, 13 league games and a cup final to play before the season ends. The aim is European football – qualifying for that now looks like it would be a miracle.
