How Newcastle United insiders really feel about their PSR situation now

Newcastle United have been unable to spend in recent transfer windows.

Indeed, the situation got so bad during the close of the summer window that Newcastle legend Alan Shearer publicly claimed owners PIF had failed manager Eddie Howe, who did not have his squad significantly strengthened.

Still, as frustrating as that is, there are reasons for that.

Newcastle, after all, reportedly came close to a ten-point deduction from the Premier League, having almost breached the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which do not allow clubs to lose more than £105m over a three-year accountancy period.

Luckily, they got over the line in the end but did have to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, something the Newcastle United manager did not want to do.

PSR limitations are said to remain in play this month, with a rather quiet time of things predicted on the January transfer front.

Still, better news may be coming for the club.

According to iNews, the club are set to announce a first profit in five years alongside record commercial revenue.

They claim Newcastle are set to confirm a profit of £27.8million when the accounts are revealed later this month. A profit on player trading is said to have helped, along with commercial deals and last season’s Champions League run.

That does not mean the club are suddenly likely to go on a spending spree this month but the report suggests insiders are confident they are through the very worst of the PSR problems for now.

Newcastle United are flying on and off the pitch

It’s been frustrating not to have seen Howe be able to strengthen with new signings, but it’s promising to hear the club believe they are through the very worst of the problems.

Having done so while keeping their star players too is quite some achievement.

While there remain some suggestions Newcastle will struggle to reduce the gap in terms of wage bills when compared to their positional rivals, it’s at least a positive development.

Unbeaten in five games across all competitions on the pitch, it seems Newcastle are getting better off of it too.
