How Newcastle United insiders are currently describing Will Osula

Newcastle United are yet to see the best of Will Osula, and nor were they expected to.

The Magpies signed Will Osula during the summer transfer window, with Paul Mitchell moving to bring a new striker to St James’ Park. He cost £10million from Sheffield United, with the fee possibly rising to £15million.

Osula arrived to provide additional cover for Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, and his arrival seemed sensible at the time – especially with Wilson’s fitness record.

However, it has become very clear that Osula is a project player for Newcastle United. He is nowhere near the finished article, nor is he a player who Eddie Howe trusts. That was evident when the 21-year-old did not feature against Everton when Isak and Wilson were out of action.

Howe has high hopes for Osula, but there is certainly a lot of work to be done to turn him into a consistent Premier League goalscorer. Newcastle know that Osula needs to become better in the final third, with Howe and his coaching staff working hard to ensure the youngster achieves his potential.

But it is unclear how long it will take for Osula to reach the required standard, with the Athletic providing an update on the forward’s development.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle United insiders are currently describing Osula as ‘unpolished’ and ‘raw’.

However, there is hope that he will become polished, with the Athletic adding that Newcastle sources point to Lewis Hall’s development as evidence to suggest that the same will happen with Osula.

It was only 12 months ago that Newcastle fans were having the same conversations about Hall, who did not look ready to play for Eddie Howe’s side. Fast forward a year and he is establishing himself as a starter at St James’ Park.

Loan move could benefit Osula and Newcastle

During his limited appearances, Osula has shown flashes of why Newcastle signed him. He is quick and powerful. Physically, he looks perfect for Eddie Howe’s side.

However, he does not look like a natural goalscorer, nor has he ever been that during his young career.

But goals will only come from minutes, which will be even harder to come by when Isak and Wilson are both fit and available for Newcastle.

That is why it is encouraging to hear that Newcastle could loan Osula out. He would really benefit from playing regularly, and that might result in him discovering that golden touch in front of goal.
