Salomon Rondon out, Joelinton in. That’s the way things seem to be going for Newcastle.
Once it was confirmed Rafa Benitez wouldn’t be staying, the possibility of Rondon returning to St James’ Park was slim. And now it has been reported by Sky Sports that the striker will link back up with Rafa at Dalian Yifang.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are reportedly close to a deal for Joelinton. The Brazilian forward looks set to become the club’s most expensive ever signing, with a fee of £36 million being suggested.
Fans really wanted Rondon to return. The 29-year-old was our talisman last season. Everything good about Newcastle went through him. But because of his age, Mike Ashley wouldn’t sanction a deal for him.
So instead, we’re getting the much younger Joelinton. At 22, he has a big future ahead of him.
The worry is that his goalscoring record isn’t particularly impressive on first glance. But then again, neither was Rondon’s when he arrived. But we gave him a chance, and we were rewarded with an exceptional number nine.
Joelinton deserves the same support. He could prove to be an excellent signing and shouldn’t be written off before kicking a ball.
With the huge reported fee, he will be under a lot of pressure to perform. And hopefully he justifies it.
