Newcastle United have rued the departure of Elliot Anderson ever since he left to join Nottingham Forest.

It is one year since Newcastle United had to cash in on Elliot Anderson, amid the pressures of PSR. The Magpies were scrambling to comply with the Premier League’s financial rules, and it resulted in some very difficult decisions being made.

Newcastle sold Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35million, which went down as pure profit due to him being a product of the club’s academy. His departure, combined with Yankuba Minteh’s exit and Dan Ashworth’s move to Manchester United, ensured that Newcastle complied with PSR and avoided a points deduction.

Ever since Anderson started wearing a Forest shirt, Toon fans have been reminded of what they were forced to let go. The 22-year-old enjoyed a brilliant debut year at the City Ground, and he has taken that form into the summer.

Elliot Anderson tipped to play for England

Anderson is part of Lee Carsley’s England Under-21s squad, alongside former Toon teammate Tino Livramento.

They are on the brink of glory, with England set to face Germany in the final on Saturday evening (8pm kick-off, BST).

Livramento has been one of England’s best players, while Anderson has also been exceptional. He has scored one goal and provided one assist during the Three Lions’ route to the final.

The man from Whitley Bay will be desperate to help England retain the European Under-21 Championship on Saturday, while journalist Henry Winter believes that more international glory is in his immediate future.

Winter wrote on X on Friday morning: “One thing that’s become abundantly clear out here in Slovakia is that the outstanding Elliot Anderson will become the sixth @WallsendBoysFC lad to play for England. Following Beardsley, Shearer, Carrick, Alan Thompson and Forster. 163 caps – and counting.”

What Newcastle United wanted to do before selling Elliot Anderson

Not only did Newcastle sell a homegrown player with a huge amount of potential, but they also sold a player who looks destined to play for the England senior side.

That will not come as a surprise to Eddie Howe, who had big plans for Anderson.

Howe has made it clear he did not want to sell Anderson, while the club were actually planning to extend the midfielder’s deal before the PSR situation grew increasingly desperate.

Newcastle were in talks with Anderson over a new contract last summer, with the midfielder expecting to remain at St James’ Park.

If it were not for PSR, that is exactly what would have happened. Instead, Newcastle were forced to sell one of their brightest prospects or suffer the consequences of a points deduction.
