‘He is nowhere near’: Ian Wright thinks 22-year-old Newcastle star can get so much better

Ian Wright is expecting big things in the future from one Newcastle United player after seeing him play against Liverpool on Sunday.

The former Arsenal man was blown away by Gordon’s performance at St James’ Park, as he scored his first ever home goal for the Magpies.

Gordon joined Newcastle back in January in a deal that could rise to £45million, and it initially looked like the club had massively overspent.

But, like a lot of Toon signings, Newcastle were buying potential. While he endured a slow start in black and white, it was clear that he was a very talented lad.

A bright summer with England and a strong pre-season for Newcastle has set Gordon up for a wonderful campaign on Tyneside, and he has started brilliantly.

The 22-year-old has a goal and an assist from his first three game, and ran Liverpool ragged on Sunday afternoon. He was unstoppable at times – until Eddie Howe decided to take him off in the 72nd minute.

Gordon is proving this season what a talent he is, and Wright believes that there is even more to come from Newcastle’s number 10.

Ian Wright majorly impressed with Anthony Gordon

Wright has appeared on the Kelly And Wrighty Show, and heaped praise on Gordon for his performance against Liverpool.

“I thought Gordon, of what I have seen of him up until this point, that’s the best I have ever seen him,” he said.

“I know he is nowhere near his final form is, but he caused so many problems for them. They looked so dishevelled with him running at them.”

More to come from the Newcastle winger

Wright is right – that probably was Gordon’s best ever performance. It certainly was his best performance in a Newcastle United shirt.

And it is certainly true that there is more to come from the winger. He will continue to improve under Howe, who is expecting big things from Gordon.

At 22, Gordon is still a very young player. He is only going to keep getting better, which must be a worrying thought for Premier League defenders given how he has started the 23/24 campaign. He looks in fine form, and is proving to be decisive in the final third.

With two goal contributions already, it is a bright start to the season for Gordon. Long may it continue.
