Harvey Barnes shares what the Newcastle players have already told him about SJP

It was a St James’ Park debut to remember for Harvey Barnes, who excelled during Newcastle United’s 4-0 win over Villarreal.

The 25-year-old started on the left wing for Newcastle‘s second Sela Cup game, as Eddie Howe‘s side went in search of silverware of sorts.

The Magpies had their hands on the trophy after the full time whistle, and it was largely down to a breathtaking performance from Barnes.

He was joined in attack by Callum Wilson and Matt Ritchie, and made a very strong claim that he should start the Premier League opener against Aston Villa. Barnes scored two goals, proving just how ruthless he is in front of goal – which is exactly why he has replaced Allan Saint-Maximin at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are back at home next weekend for the first game of the season, and Barnes can’t wait to see what the atmosphere is like after sampling it on Sunday during the club’s final pre-season friendly of the summer.

Barnes spoke to NUFC TV after the 4-0 win over Villarreal, and shared what his teammates have told him about the St James’ Park atmosphere.

“It was great support today, but I’m looking forward to next week when it’ll be a sellout and it’ll be rocking,” he said.

“The lads have already mentioned to me how big the atmosphere is here. Playing as an away team I already know that, so it’s going to be great to play in front of them with the support behind me.

“It’s going to be an exciting season for us, there’s a lot going on, so I just can’t wait to get started now.”

Won’t take Newcastle fans long to get behind Barnes

The atmosphere will be excellent on Saturday for the first game of the season, especially if Newcastle play like they did against Villarreal.

The Magpies put on an attacking clinic, scoring four wonderful goals to blow away the La Liga side.

Barnes’ goals were particularly enjoyable, as he showed exactly why the club spent so much money on him. His performance should give him real confidence going into the Aston Villa game.

If he scores Premier League goals inside St James’ Park just like he did in the Sela Cup then it won’t be long before the Toon Army are singing his name. Fans will quickly get behind the summer signing, who is excited to experience the SJP atmosphere in a competitive game for the first time as a home player.
