Newcastle United have announced the signing of Harrison Ashby on transfer deadline day, and the youngster is already aiming to become as good as Kieran Trippier.
The 21-year-old has arrived from West Ham United for £3milllion, and will be a member of Eddie Howe’s first-team rather than a youth player.
The Magpies have been trying to sign a player like Ashby all month – someone who can provide backup for Trippier before eventually going on to potentially replace him.
Ivan Fresneda, Malo Gusto and Cody Drameh were all linked, but it is Ashby who has arrived. And he believes he could be the ideal man to eventually take Trippier’s place given the qualities he possesses.
Harrison Ashby thinks he is ‘quite similar’ to Kieran Trippier
The new signing has completed an interview with NUFC TV, and was asked to describe his style of play.

“Easiest way to put it is modern fullback,” Ashby said.
“I like to get up and down, put crosses in. I like a long shot – that’s kind of my thing.
“Quite similar to Tripps – I like to get up and down, which is someone for me coming here is a big attraction. He’s one of the best right-backs in the league, if not in Europe. Coming here to learn from him, obviously we’ve got similar styles of play, is going to be a big thing for me in my progression to be as good, if not better.”
Harrison Ashby comments suggest he is perfect for Newcastle
Ashby sounds like the perfect fit for Newcastle. He is incredibly eager to learn from Trippier, and already thinks that he has a similar skill set to the 32-year-old.
The defender will be well aware that he is one for the future on Tyneside. Trippier is the present, and he recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at St James’ Park until 2025.
But Ashby hopes to emulate the England international, and believes that under his guidance he can become just as good – or possibly even better.
Even just getting close to Trippier’s level will make Ashby a bargain at £3million. If he can surpass him then his arrival could prove to be a masterstroke by Sporting Director Dan Ashworth.
