Gary Neville believes Manchester United still have a key characteristic to hold over the likes of Newcastle United.
Newcastle United, of course, sit way above the Red Devils in the Premier League and have genuine hopes of qualifying for the Champions League through that way.
Ruben Amorim’s side, however, could join them at Europe’s top table next season should they win the Europa League. They hold a huge advantage over Athletic Bilbao in Thursday night’s semi-final second leg at Old Trafford, having won 3-0 out in Spain last week.
Despite the fact they are languishing way down in 15th in the Premier League table, they could still finish the season with a trophy. For that reason, Neville believes his former club still hold something over the likes of Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham.

Gary Neville’s claim about Newcastle United
Eddie Howe‘s side ended the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic honour this season.
Indeed, Newcastle won the Carabao Cup by beating Liverpool back in March to finally end their hoodoo.
However, Neville thinks there’s still “something” about the Manchester club that makes them a team much more likely to win silverware than Newcastle, Everton, Villa and Spurs.
Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, they have lifted the FA Cup twice, the Carabao Cup twice and the Europa League.
Speaking on The Overlap, the pundit said: “If you said to me, in what would be your poor times or bad times which [Manchester] United have had and you’re winning three or four FA Cups and you’re winning a Europa League in a ten-year period.
“Some clubs don’t win trophies for 50-60 years. Everton, Villa, Tottenham, Newcastle. For [Manchester] United to win the trophies they’ve won in the last five-six years – if they are to win this trophy – is unbelievable really.
“There is still something about [Manchester] United.”
Wayne Rooney’s Newcastle United warning to Manchester United
Based on trophies alone, the Red Devils are streets ahead of Newcastle. There is little point in hiding that.
However, it’s not about what’s come before. Past glories belong, well, in the past.
Old Trafford legend Wayne Rooney thinks Manchester United should be wary of Newcastle, who now appear to be much more attractive a destination for potential targets if all things were equal.
It takes time and money to get into a position to regularly win trophies. Granted, Manchester United have managed to do it during a rocky period for the club but that’s overlooking the vast sums they’ve still spent on players during those years.
