Gary Neville has described Kieran Trippier going off injured against Aston Villa is ‘a real problem for Newcastle’.

The Magpies are currently 1-0 up against Steven Gerrard’s side at St. James’ Park.

Incidentally, it was Trippier who gave the Magpies the lead.

After Craig Pawson had initially awarded a penalty to Newcastle, VAR intervened to award a free-kick.

England international Trippier stepped up to take it and just like against Everton in midweek, he scored.

There was a degree of fortune about this one as it took a deflection off Emi Buendia. That completely wrong-footed goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

Trippier would not feature for much longer though.

Just after the restart, the 31-year-old kicked the ball out of play and went down.

Medics went on to the pitch, and it was immediately clear that he needed to come off.

Trippier had actually been an injury doubt coming into the game.

Speaking on co-commentary for Sky Sports, pundit Gary Neville said: “That’s not good. He’s been a massive influence on them and the crowd sigh.

“He’s took the captain’s armband off, it’s gone already to (Jonjo) Shelvey. I think that’s a real problem for Newcastle. Not necessarily because they’ve lost a good player at right-back. I think he’s infectious. To his teammates and all around the ground.”
