Newcastle United are firmly in contention for Champions League qualification.
The Premier League could well be afforded five spots this season and Newcastle currently sit fifth.
While the 4-1 defeat to Bournemouth was a blip, Eddie Howe’s side are flying right now. With no European football to complicate the schedule, surely few would bet against them finishing in at least the top five.
Still, that is easier said than done of course.
Newcastle beat Southampton on Saturday but that will do little to prove anything. There are some big competitors going for Champions League qualification, not least the Cherries after they smashed high-flying Nottingham Forest 5-0.
Chelsea are another in contention, albeit they lost to Manchester City this weekend. The Blues sit sixth in the Premier League table, just a point behind Newcastle.

Speaking about the battle for the top four or five, Gary Neville gave his view.

Gary Neville thinks Chelsea have a better squad than Newcastle United
Neville was harsh in some of his criticism following Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat at City on Saturday evening.
He believes Enzo Maresca’s side should be doing better, such is the level of talent available to the Italian.
In fact, Neville said he believes Chelsea have a better squad than all of Newcastle, Forest and Bournemouth.
He told Sky Sports: “I actually think there’s a lot of talent out on that pitch and they’ve had a really good season. They’re ahead of teams in talent, like Newcastle, like Nottingham Forest [and] Bournemouth.”
Newcastle United’s squad compared to Chelsea
Chelsea have spent some huge money, so naturally have some brilliant players. Cole Palmer is perhaps the standout and it would be foolish to suggest the England star wouldn’t get in the Newcastle team.
Aside from that, however, it’s difficult to make a definitive case for any of Palmer’s teammates. Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke may all start on the right of Newcastle’s attack but Jacob Murphy has more Premier League assists than all of them so far this season.
Newcastle have the ninth most valuable squad in world football. Chelsea are up in fifth but it’s difficult to make a case of too many of their players getting into Howe’s side.
