Newcastle United are not going to finish as high in the Premier League this season as they did during the 2023/24 campaign.

That is the view of pundit Gary Neville, who has had his say on who will finish where in the Premier League this season.

The new campaign is just days away, with Newcastle’s first game against Aston Villa on Saturday evening. It is a tough start to the season, with Unai Emery’s side looking like they are going to have another strong year.

But Newcastle will feel the same, and Eddie Howe is very happy with what he has seen from his team during pre-season.

However, the Magpies do have the added challenge of competing in the Champions League, and that is what Neville believes will hinder their Premier League form.

Gary Neville thinks Newcastle will finish outside the top six

Neville has been speaking on The Overlap on YouTube alongside Jamie Carragher, and has shared his prediction for the Premier League’s top six this season.

“Just because of the three thing and never winning a fourth I am going to go Arsenal to win the league, City second,” he said.

“I think Arsenal can beat them this year. I think Arsenal, City, Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Villa.

“Newcastle and to be fair Tottenham, I just think Newcastle Champions League and Tottenham, I’m not quite sure what is going on there.”

Difficult for Newcastle to go again

Neville does not think Newcastle will finish in the top six, which might be difficult for Toon fans to stomach.

But even to finish as low as seventh would not be disappointing, despite coming fourth last year.

While we are going to be stronger, we do have the added pressure of competing in the Champions League. It is new territory for a lot of these players, and it will have an impact whether we like it or not.

On top of that, the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool simply have to improve. They can’t be as poor as they were last season.

Then you have got the emerging force of Villa, who will hope to emulate what we did last season.

It is a bit of a lottery for Newcastle. We could play just as well but be down in seventh. The main thing for Howe will be to continue progressing as a team and be competitive. The league position will sort itself out come May.

But would seventh be acceptable? Realistically, it has got to be, even if it represents a major decline from last season.
