Alan Shearer’s Newcastle United beat Gary Lineker’s Leicester City on Saturday.

The Magpies triumphed over the Foxes at St James’ Park, as Eddie Howe’s side got back to winning ways after receiving a lot of criticism.

Alan Shearer was not happy with Newcastle United after their loss to Brentford, with consistency continuing to allude them.

Newcastle have not been good enough against the teams they should be beating, but that appeared to change on Saturday. The Magpies were the favourites, and went on to be victorious in convincing fashion.

However, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has suggested there was one key reason why Newcastle United were so dominant against his beloved Leicester City.

Gary Lineker’s hilarious response as Newcastle United beat Leicester City

Speaking on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer was delighted with Newcastle’s performance against Leicester.

As for Lineker, he has done his best to make excuses for his side’s ‘crap’ display at St James’ Park.

“I want to congratulate you Alan on a fine success,” he said.

“Then remind you that our entire midfield was out, with Ndidi injured, Soumare suspended, Harry Winks injured and Buonanotte coming back off the bench.

“We were crap, to be honest. And you [Newcastle] were really, really, really good. So it was a combination of the two.

“I’m very happy you weren’t in on Saturday, Alan [for Match of the Day]. Very happy. I was thinking this would have been an interminable day [had you been in].”

Newcastle United punished Leicester City

As Lineker says, Leicester City were nowhere near good enough to get a result against Newcastle on Saturday.

From a Newcastle perspective, it was good to see Eddie Howe’s side take advantage and record a convincing result. It is the first time this campaign that Newcastle United have really battered an opponent, with the goals flowing inside St James’ Park like they did last season.

In truth, the Magpies could have scored more, but Eddie Howe’s side have very much re-found the scoring touch.

Up until recent weeks, Newcastle had been poor in front of goal. But they are having no such issues now, scoring nine goals in their last three games.

Hopefully they continue their hot streak of goals against Brentford and Ipswich Town this week, as Newcastle aim to continue their quest for silverware whilst also climbing the Premier League table.
