Gary Lineker has asked Alan Shearer an important question as Sunderland prepare to face Newcastle United in the Premier League once again.
Sunderland are a Premier League team again, having won promotion from the Championship last season. That means that the Tyne-Wear derby is returning, with the local rivals scheduled to face each other in December and March.
It is going to be a difficult season for Newcastle United’s biggest rivals, but they have invested heavily in an effort to avoid relegation from the Premier League. Their biggest signing is Habib Diarra from Strasbourg, while they have also added an experienced head in Granit Xhaka.
While Sunderland have done some impressive business, Newcastle have struggled in the transfer market.

Alan Shearer calls Gary Lineker an ‘idiot’ after Sunderland question
With that in mind, Gary Lineker has done his best to get a reaction from Alan Shearer as they predict the new Premier League season alongside Micah Richards for the Rest Is Football podcast.
“They’ve had a go, haven’t they?” Shearer said about Sunderland’s transfer business.
Lineker replied: “They’ve had a real go. I suppose the big question is will they finish above Newcastle?”
“Shut up, you idiot,” Shearer responded.
The trio could not contain their laughter, as Lineker added: “Got a little nibble there.”
Alan Shearer thinks Sunderland will be relegated
After laughing and joking together, Shearer gave his honest verdict on how he thinks Sunderland will do upon their return to the Premier League.
The Newcastle United legend is anticipating a challenging campaign, and one that will likely end in relegation back to the Championship.
“Same as the other promoted teams, they’ll struggle,” he said.
“It will be really tough for them. I’ve got them being relegated again.”
Recent history is not on Sunderland’s side. In the previous two seasons, the three promoted sides have gone straight back down. That is a trend that the Black Cats must buck if they are to continue rubbing shoulders with Newcastle United.
They start the 2025/26 season at home to West Ham United on Saturday, in a game that could see former Toon striker Callum Wilson make his Hammers debut.
The 33-year-old never played against Sunderland during his Newcastle United career, having missed the 2024 FA Cup clash at the Stadium of Light due to injury.
