Fulham get rid of former Newcastle defender Kevin Mbabu already

Former Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu returned to the Premier League at the start of the season, but his time with Fulham is already coming to an end.

The Switzerland international left the Magpies permanently in the summer of 2017, but returned to England during the summer. He signed for Marco Silva’s Fulham side, with the Cottagers paying Wolfsburg £4.9million for the right-back.

The deal also included £1.8million worth of add-ons, but it feels highly unlikely that the additional clauses will have been activated.

That is because Fulham have already loaned out Mbabu after almost seven months at Craven Cottage. He signed a three-year deal with the option of an additional 12 months, but there is now no chance of him seeing out that contract.

Kevin Mbabu returns to Servette

The 27-year-old has returned to Switzerland and rejoined Servette – the club who Newcastle initially bought him from in January 2013.

10 years on and he is back after failing to have any kind of impact at Fulham. He looked like a smart addition for the newly promoted side, having impressed in Germany and on the international stage.

However, limited minutes has seen Silva cut his losses early and get rid of Mbabu at the first opportunity. According to Fabrizio Romano, he will return to Fulham in the summer once his loan ends but is then expected to leave the club again.

Previously looked like Newcastle made a mistake with Mbabu

When Newcastle got rid of Mbabu all those years ago, it looked like a massive mistake. He was clearly a player with potential, and had impressed when he got the chance to play in black and white.

Supporters will never forget his Premier League debut at left-back against Chelsea when he held his own against Eden Hazard, back when the Belgian was one of the best players in the world.

Mbabu always looked like one that had got away, and had the chance to show that Newcastle made a mistake with his move to Fulham. But his Premier League return has proven to be a nightmare.

He has made just six league appearances for Fulham this season, with only one of those being from the start. That was actually against Newcastle, where he endured a horrible 45 minutes before being replaced at half time. Eddie Howe’s side went on to win 4-1.

Now Fulham have already got rid, and Mbabu’s comeback ends in tears. Hopefully he has more luck back at Servette, who are currently second in the top tier of Swiss football.
