Frustrations have emerged behind the scenes at Newcastle amid training ground update

A new training ground has long been mooted at Newcastle United.

Indeed, in the wake of PIF’s takeover at Newcastle in 2021, former director Amanda Staveley spoke of the need to improve the current set-up at the club.

Darsley Park in Benton was renamed the Newcastle United Training Centre in June 2023 and work has been done to bring it up to a standard befitting a club of their ambition.

Still, there’s only so much that can be done on an existing site that went neglected for so long under Mike Ashley. This, after all, was a place Jonjo Shelvey admitted wasn’t up to Premier League standards.

Thus far, progress has been slow on a potential move away. Clearly, it’s not something the club can rush into and the logistics involved naturally make it a rather prolonged process.

However, there appears to have been an update.

The very latest on a potential new training ground for Newcastle

According to Craig Hope in The Daily Mail, top brass at the club are working on fresh plans to expand the site of the current training ground.

It is said that a gravel area currently used as a car park has been looked at for development, which will increase the size of the operation on the site.

That doesn’t mean a move to a completely new base can be completely ruled out but is thought to indicate that such a radical change is some way off.

People at the club are reportedly accepting that a move to a new complex may happen way after their time at Newcastle, though the delay is said to have frustrated some.

Naturally, it seems they are keen to move into an elite training base on par with the clubs Newcastle are trying to rival.

When could Newcastle actually get a new training ground?

While its promising to hear there are plans in place to expand what Newcastle are currently working with, the fact the move is still years away is hardly breaking news. The reported frustrations, however, are noteworthy and perhaps indicate at a club rapidly outgrowing their current set-up.

Even last year, The Daily Telegraph suggested the club were likely to remain in Benton for at least another decade
