Former Newcastle United player Florian Thauvin has his contract terminated

Florian Thauvin is now a free agent after the former Newcastle United player had his contract terminated by latest club Tigres.

The Frenchman has been playing in Mexico since the summer of 2021. He made the move across the Atlantic after his Marseille contract expired.

Thauvin had plenty of suitors, and was even linked with a move back to the Premier League – a division where he had previously flopped in.

However, at the age of 28, the winger took his talents to North America. He was entering his peak years as a footballer, but turned his back on the major European leagues and decided to ply his trade for Tigres.

A year-and-a-half later, Thuavin is now without a club.

Tigres terminate Florian Thauvin’s contract

Tigres announced on Monday that they would be ending their association with Thauvin.

In a brief statement, the Mexican club said: “Club Tigres informs that the decision has been made to terminate the employment relationship with the player, Florian Tristán Mariano Thauvin. We thank Florian for the effort and professionalism shown throughout the year and a half in which he served with us and we wish him every success in his future projects.”

The announcement means that Thauvin’s time at Tigres has ended three-and-a-half years earlier than anticipated. He signed a five-year contract in the summer of 2021, joining Andre-Pierre Gignac at the Liga MX club.

Thauvin leaves the Tigers having made 38 appearances in total, scoring eight goals and providing five assists. He turns 30 on Thursday, and will now be on the lookout for a new employer.

A return to Marseille is reportedly not on the cards, and there is no chance he will be on his way back to Newcastle – despite Eddie Howe’s need for a forward.

Thauvin was a disaster at Newcastle

While in 2023 Thauvin is a free agent, in 2018 he became a World Cup winner. He was part of the France squad that triumphed in Russia.

The fact he was in the squad summed up how he had rebuilt his career during his second spell at Marseille, having massively flopped during his one and only spell in English football.

Thauvin joined Newcastle in the summer of 2015, costing £13million from Marseille. The deal also saw Remy Cabella go the other way on loan.

Steve McClaren had made some exciting signings that summer, with Thauvin joining other young talents at St James’ Park such as Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba.

But by the time they all left the club, none of them had really enjoyed a great career on Tyneside.

Thauvin was the first to leave, and only lasted half a season in the Premier League. He made 16 appearances in total for the Magpies, with his time as a Newcastle player best known for wearing a tuxedo before a game.

That pretty much sums up his Newcastle career. The talented wide player was shipped back to France at the first opportunity, re-finding his form in Ligue 1 while the Magpies slumped towards relegation.

Thauvin was a player with huge potential, but he never came close to realising it at Newcastle. He had the ability, but was not a good fit at all for the club at the time.

It is only really Marseille where he has thrived, and now another club have got rid of him earlier than planned.
