Former Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is in the form of his life

Once upon a time, Aleksandar Mitrovic was a Newcastle United cult hero.

The forward arrived with a lot of fanfare, signed by Steve McClaren for £13million from Anderlecht in the summer of 2015.

By the end of his first season, Newcastle had been relegated and Mitrovic had scored nine Premier League goals. He also picked up two red cards.

The appointment of Rafa Benitez was the beginning of the end for Mitro. He only managed four goals in the Championship, and in January 2018 he was loaned out to Fulham.

The Serbian striker then joined Fulham permanently that summer, costing a huge £27million. He’s been much better down south, even if he has failed to live up to the initial hype.

Particularly in the Championship, Mitrovic has been unstoppable. And this season has been no different.

Mitro’s on fire again

He barely featured under Scott Parker in the Premier League last season. The Cottagers were relegated, and Parker was replaced by Marco Silva.

Fulham are looking to bounce straight back up, and Mitrovic is leading the charge.

They’re currently second with 38 points, while Mitrovic leads the goalscoring charts with 20 goals in just 17 appearances.

It’s a remarkable tally, and he’s taken his club form to the international stage.

Serbia grabbed a last-gasp winner against Portugal on Sunday evening, guaranteeing their place at next year’s World Cup.

Mitrovic will be in Qatar, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal will need to navigate a playoff if they’re to qualify.

While some may argue that this is further proof that we let Mitro leave too soon, perhaps it was just a case of the ‘wrong club’.

Mitrovic has always been a star in the Championship for Fulham, while he can be a talisman for Serbia.

But in a black and white shirt, he will always be a player who divided opinion but ultimately didn’t deliver.
