Former Newcastle player Paul Woolston reportedly set to be released

When former Newcastle youngster Paul Woolston joined Manchester United, it looked as though the Magpies had made a mistake.

Woolston was released by the club in the summer of 2018, nowhere near getting a chance in the first-team.

A few months later, and Woolston’s next move turned heads.

The goalkeeper was signed by Manchester United following an impressive trial, and immediately linked up with the club’s development squad.

He signed a new deal at Old Trafford last year – a contract which is set to expire this summer.

And according to the Manchester Evening News, he won’t be getting a new deal.

The report states that Woolston is set to be part of goalkeeper reshuffle at Manchester United this summer, which could see up to four stoppers leave the club.

What next for Woolston?

It’s unclear what the future holds for Woolston.

The move to Manchester United felt weird at the time, and unfortunately for him it hasn’t led to first-team opportunities at Old Trafford.

Now aged 22, Woolston needs to join a club where he can get senior football, something that has alluded him throughout his career.

During his time at Newcastle, Woolston had multiple loan spells at local non-league clubs. He had temporary moves to South Shields, Blyth Spartans, Gateshead and Darlington.

Having spent so long playing youth football, it’s hard to gauge what level he is at.

At just 22, Woolston still has a long career ahead of him.

But with a plethora of quality goalkeepers at Newcastle, it was clear that Woolston wouldn’t get a chance in the first-team.

And now with his Manchester United contract nearing its expiry, it’s clear he won’t be getting a chance there either.
