For a lot of fans, Kevin Mbabu is the one that got away.

The Swiss defender amazed the Toon Army on his Premier League debut against Chelsea. Asked to play out of position up against one of the best players in the world, Mbabu held his own at left-back up versus Eden Hazard.

Sadly, that was about as good as it got in a Toon shirt for him. He would make just two more league appearances for the Magpies, starting in a 6-1 defeat to Manchester City then coming off the bench in a 1-0 away win at Bournemouth.

Newcastle were relegated, and the next season he was sent to Young Boys on loan by Rafa Benitez. Mbabu never played for Newcastle under the Spaniard, who eventually sold him in 2017.

But the youngster proved Rafa wrong back in Switzerland, turning heads with his performances at right-back for Young Boys. It appeared to be a rare Rafa Benitez mistake as Newcastle boss.

This summer he returned to one of Europe’s top divisions, signing a four-year deal with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg for around £7 million.

But so far, things haven’t gone as planned for Mbabu. The defender is yet to start a league game for his new side, limited to just one substitute appearance. He’s played 11 Bundesliga minutes, spending the rest of his time on the bench.

Wolfsburg have thrived without him, currently second and unbeaten after seven games. A title bid could be on the cards, but will Mbabu get to be a part of it?
