Former Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is being linked with a return to the Premier League.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Jose Mourinho, but are yet to appoint his replacement.

They suffered a blow on Friday, as Ajax boss Erik ten Hag extended his contract with the Eredivisie giants.

They are also reportedly interested in Brendan Rodgers and Gareth Southgate.

And another name that has entered the conversation is Benitez.

Earlier in the week, the Daily Mail reported that the Spaniard was being considered by Daniel Levy.

And the Evening Standard have claimed that Benitez would consider an approach from Spurs.

So could we see Benitez back in the Premier League?

Benitez to Tottenham would be a shock

Seeing Benitez back in the Premier League would be a bitter pill to swallow.

Most Toon fans would surely wish he was still patrolling the St James’ Park touchline, neatly putting his glasses away after another satisfying win.

Benitez was a hero on Tyneside. He gave the club hope, but was forced out by Mike Ashley.

He is more than capable of managing a club higher up the league like Tottenham, but it would be a surprise if he was appointed.

Spurs seem to want a young and progressive coach who will play attacking football.

And while Benitez certainly wants his teams to attack, his biggest strength is in his organisation and solidity. That’s why he was so successful at Newcastle.

It would be a surprise to see him at Spurs, but one day we will surely see him in the Premier League once again. And he will no doubt prove why Ashley was wrong to let him go.
