Florian Lejeune will return to action tonight following his latest horror injury, the club have confirmed.
The French defender is set to feature for the under-23s side against Middlesbrough in a Premier League 2 tie.
He hasn’t played a minute of football since April, when he suffered a horrific injury against Crystal Palace following an innocuous challenge with Andros Townsend.
It was awful for Lejeune, who was really getting back to his best after suffering a different knee injury during pre-season in 2018. He’s had some horrible luck, but his speed of recovery is almost superhuman.
Almost seven months later, Lejeune is ready to return to action. He’ll play for Neil Redfearn’s side at Whitley Park tonight, as he looks to gain some match fitness ahead of his first-team return.
If things go well tonight, there’s no reason he can’t be in contention to play on Saturday against West Ham. It might be a stretch, but his name will certainly enter the conversation if he gets through tonight unscathed.
Lejeune has been excellent since arriving at St James’ Park, and should walk back into the starting XI when he’s ready. Hopefully that happens this weekend, as we could do with a lift from somewhere.
With a bit of luck, he’ll have learned how to play as a striker during his time off…
